We are delighted to announce the appointment of Anne-Sophie Poulin-Girard to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for a 3-year term.

Anne-Sophie Girard-Poulin is a researcher at the Observatory and in the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Optics at Université Laval, where she also holds a PhD. Her expertise in optical instrumentation and metrology has led her to contribute to a number of research and development projects. She was also scientific coordinator of the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Neurophotonics.

Recognized by her peers for her work in optics-photonics education, Anne-Sophie Poulin-Girard co-chaired the ETOP international congress held in Quebec City in 2019, and has held important governance positions within international organizations. In particular, she has been involved with SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics, an international not-for-profit professional society with over 21,000 members. Among other roles, she chaired the Society’s Education Committee and held a position on SPIE’s Strategic Planning Committee for 3 years.

Quickly aware of the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (EDI) in science and engineering, Anne-Sophie Poulin-Girard has been involved with Women in Optics since 2012. She also took part in the development of an activity led by Sentinelle Nord for the 2020 International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and was recently appointed to the EDI committee of the Centre d’optique, photonique et laser.

NSERC supports the ecosystem of discovery and innovation in science and engineering across Canada, investing more than $1.3 billion annually. Council members are selected through a merit-based process to select the best candidates. The Board is made up of 18 exceptional Canadians.

Congratulations on this well-deserved appointment!
